Trip Report for London Ring
June 30 - July 2

This trip was supposed to be a replica of last year's event, which was a great success. This year, however, tragedy struck.

It started well enough, with Hebe 3 and Club Claret slipping out into the Thames at 1115, to meet up with Porgy and Bess and set off for Limehouse. It was a bumpy ride as we ploughed through the Pool of London and under Tower Bridge, but otherwise uneventful and spectacular as ever. We pulled into Limehouse for a very pleasant lunch at the Grapes, and then set off along the Regent's canal, through several locks before mooring up at the Narrowboat in Islington for the night.

We spent a pleasant evening in the Narrowboat - good food, a glass of wine and good company, but when the Commodore and his Lady stepped out onto the towpath, ready for bed, they discovered that Club Claret had sunk to the bottom of the canal, with just the cabin showing above the waves! The emergency services were called, but offered no real assistance, only condolences, so there was little alternative to taking a cab home.

Club Claret

Next morning, the other two boats left on the next leg of the journey: Camden, London Zoo, Little Venice and round to the Black Horse, all of which went smoothly, according to reports. Meanwhile, back at Islington, the Commodore was scratching his head as he surveyed his stricken boat. Several nearby boat-dwellers came by to offer advice and sympathy, and the cause of the problem was revealed: it seems that some 20 revellers were sitting on the side of Club Claret, which caused her to heel over, and submerge a drain hole through which the canal entered slowly and stealthily.

General opinion was that, with some ropes and a few strong men, we could in fact right her and then bail her out, so it was agreed that we would meet on Sunday morning to give it a try. Bearing pumps from the Marina, extra ropes, buckets and bungs, the Commodore and Vice-Commodore arrived at Islington again, and sure enough, with help from our new-found friends, we pulled CC onto an even keel and then bucketed as fast as we could. Slowly Club Claret rose from the waves, the pumps were installed and by lunchtime, she was looking much more like a boat, and less like a wreck.

Meanwhile, Hebe 3 and Porgy & Bess were on course from Greenford to Brentford, pausing only to retrieve numerous plastic bags around their props. Eventually, they arrived safely at the Fox in Hanwell for a well deserved - if slightly late - lunch.

I am happy to report that - having found a mechanic to sort out and restart the engine - Club Claret is safely back in the Dock, drying out and awaiting a good scrub. My sincere thanks go to all those who lent equipment and encouragement, and especially to John Scott, for giving up his Sunday, and to Jan & Leslie, and MJC for crewing her back.
